Playscript of Warrior Square
by Nick Wood
‘This is theatre at
its most relevant’
Theatre Programmer
Warrior Square was the third production in Action Transport’s wider world season’ following productions of “Dumisani’s Drum”, exploring Sowetan culture, and ‘Made in Cheshire’, which looked at attitudes around racism and diversity in Cheshire.
In Spring 2003, ‘Warrior Square’ toured for eight weeks to schools, venues and community centres in Cheshire and the surrounding region, offering the 4,600 people who experienced the show, the chance to put themselves in someone else’s shoes.
Like much good drama, by ‘Warrior Square’ offering us the chance to put ourselves in someone else shoes it offered up questions such as what would it be like to have to leave our home or school? How would we react if we lost loved ones in a conflict? What would we do if we had to begin our lives again in a foreign and sometimes hostile environment?
Our aim with Warrior Square has been to create an inspiring, wonderful piece of theatre which fuels the imagination.
Feedback from Warrior Square 2003:
One comment from a friend with pretty vast experience in drama for young people said "it restored my faith in theatre for young people". Brain Hallet, Board Member
‘I just thought it was brilliantly
done and very relevant to the children’
Primary School Teacher, Liverpool
‘Very powerful…
sophisticated treatment of some tough themes’
Simon Taylor, Senior Education Advisor
Cheshire County Council
‘Warrior Square, like all the best ‘children’s theatre’,
is first and foremost, simply good theatre. Action Transport
make theatre for children but’ Warrior Square’ is
recommended for everybody over the age of eight’.
Theatre Programmer
‘I have seen quite a few Action Transport productions and this was by far the best’ Head Teacher, Cheshire
