Tika by Sizwe Vilakazi
A new play written and performed by Sizwe Vilakazi,
in collaboration with
Vulavulani Theatre Company, South Africa.
Louie Ingham, Projects Manager and Guy Christiansen, Associate Artist
travelled to South Africa at the end of February for the first
development week on the play.
There will be three development weeks taking place in June 2007.
A play for anyone 14+. Tika takes its audience to Soweto , South Africa . There, Tika, a fifteen year-old boy lives alone and walks on the wrong side of the tracks.
Tika is a `staged autobiography’, inspired and performed by Sizwe Vilakazi. A funny, moving and uplifting story set in post-apartheid South Africa . Sizwe Vilakazi is a brilliant performer, having performed many times in the UK in previous Action Transport/Vulavulani productions.
We are looking to:
- Follow and support the development of the idea – we believe that Sizwe’s play could be fantastically engaging; we also know that he certainly won’t write the play in a conventional way.
- Further explore the idea of plays inspired by real people and also plays which appeal to anyone 14+.
- Offer a unique product for national touring.
- Push on and develop the relationship with Vulavulani.
- Tour process and product – combining Tika with the `Inspiring the Inspirers’ project working with up to 8 partner companies and venues nationally.
- Potentially connect this play in with the European Capital of Culture Year 2008.
