Scorcher is the most exciting, scariest ride you’ve ever seen. You probably haven’t got the guts to go on it. Scorcher makes Alton Towers look like a candy-floss stall. The Waltzers are for wusses. It is the bull’s eye of every punter’s good night out at the fair.
But as the punters jump the rides and dodge the dodgems, the Walsh family is locked in a battle for control of the ride. As the money comes in, three generations are falling out.
And through it all, Darren – sixteen, talented and heading for art school – must work out where he’s going; with the fair to the next pitch or to a new life? Performed in a dynamic, fluid style with a specially commissioned soundtrack, Scorcher takes you on a thrilling ride, a journey to the edge of the abyss.
“Scorcher” is first and foremost an original work of art, a work of fiction informed by an understanding of Showpeople’s `life on the road’.
- “Scorcher” is about three generations of one family who work the travelling fair. The family travels for eight months of the year to work and spends the winter months in one place.
- “Scorcher” is a fast, complex play about human relationships with a brother (16) and sister (15) at its heart. It touches on many areas, including family, community, outsiders, identity, independence, making choices, morality and male violence. The events of the play could happen in virtually any family, not just to families of Showpeople
“Scorcher” contains many of the ingredients found in classic drama – love, hate, intrigue, violence, ambition, greed, humour.
